Google has updated its official guide for optimizing for AI Search, clarifying that LLMS.txt files have no impact on search rankings. The company explicitly states that Google Search does not utilize these files for ranking purposes, nor for its generative AI capabilities. This update aims to dispel confusion surrounding the role of these files.
The company updates its AI Search optimization guide, stating these files neither help nor harm visibility.
Google’s updated guidance specifies that advertisers do not need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search. While Google Search may discover, crawl, and index various file types beyond HTML, these are not treated in any special way for ranking or visibility. The core message is that LLMS.txt files are simply ignored by Google Search.
The clarification also notes that it is acceptable for sites to create and maintain LLMS.txt files for other services or systems that might use them. Doing so will not negatively or positively affect a website’s visibility or rankings within Google Search. This means paid media professionals and SEOs can focus on established optimization practices without concern for these specific AI-related files.
