Google Search Console Adds AI Performance Reports

Google is rolling out new Search Generative AI performance reports within Google Search Console, alongside a new toggle for website owners to block their content from appearing in AI Mode and AI Overviews. These features are initially available to a subset of website owners in the UK, with a broader global expansion planned for the future.

New features offer insights into AI Search visibility and allow content exclusion from generative AI responses.

The Search Generative AI Performance report provides data on how a site’s content performs within Google’s AI responses and AI Overviews. This report includes metrics such as impressions, pages, countries, devices, and dates, offering insights into content visibility within these new generative AI features. Notably, the report does not include click data, meaning advertisers will not see how many users click from AI responses to their sites.

In addition to performance reporting, Google is introducing a control within Search Console that allows sites to opt out of having their content appear in generative AI Search features. Website owners can use a new toggle to prevent their content from being used to ground responses in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google states that sites opting out will not receive traffic or impressions from these generative AI features, but this control will not negatively impact their ranking in core web search results.

These updates provide paid media professionals and SEOs with new tools to understand and manage their presence in Google’s evolving AI-powered search landscape. The performance reports offer a glimpse into how content is being surfaced in AI responses, while the blocking control gives publishers agency over how their information is utilized by generative AI. Both features are expected to expand globally after initial testing in the UK.
