Facebook has officially updated its policy on live video storage. As of today, any new live video posted to the platform will be automatically deleted after 30 days—a shift from its previous practice of indefinite storage.
Key changes to live video retention
30-day limit for all new live videos
All live broadcasts from February 19 onwards will remain accessible for up to 30 days. During this time, creators can download, share, or transfer their videos. After that, the content will be permanently removed.
Older live videos to be removed in phases
Archived live videos created before this policy change will also be deleted gradually. Facebook will provide 90 days’ notice via email and in-app alerts, giving users time to take action.
New tools to manage your live video content
To support creators and businesses, Facebook has introduced a set of tools to help users retain or repurpose their content easily.
Download your videos
- Single download: Navigate to any live video, select the “…” menu, and click “Download video.”
Bulk download: Use your Activity Log or Page’s Videos tab to filter for live broadcasts and download multiple videos at once.
Transfer to cloud services
Choose the “Transfer live videos” option to send content directly to services like Google Drive or Dropbox, eliminating the need to save files locally.
Convert to reels
Clip and repurpose highlights from a recorded live stream to create Facebook Reels, which aren’t subject to the 30-day limit.
Postpone deletion
Facebook is also offering a six-month postponement option for users needing more time to manage their archive.
Why Facebook is making this change
According to Facebook, the decision aligns with industry standards and better reflects how people engage with live video. Since most views occur within the first few weeks, long-term storage adds limited value for both creators and audiences.
What creators need to do now
If you regularly stream live video on Facebook, it’s important to:
- Review your existing archive for videos older than 30 days
- Take advantage of the new download and transfer tools
- Consider converting high-performing streams into reels
- Use the postponement option if you need more time
